Ok. I’ve had some time to think. All I’ve been doing is THINKING. And I loved it, a wonderful sci-fi/disaster/horror film. It wasn’t scary. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be. Sir Ridders back doing sci-fi ; I’m happy. BUT. 3 BIG buts… In descending order.
1) that script was awful. Ideas? Plot? Brilliant. Script? Awful. Trying too hard to make sure we recognise the themes and character beats from Alien (hey man we’re just workers up in space on a job/ hey I’m the crew member that’s all earthy and traditional/ hey I’m the one you shouldn’t trust) and far too much expositional dialogue and supposedly intelligent characters doing ridiculous and inexplicable things (hey let’s try and stroke the weird dangerous looking creature). All of Fassbender’s lines were great somehow, but the rest was shit, and frankly unworthy of the material.
2) Why oh why have actors doing accents? Does the characters nationality REALLY matter? Rapace’s posh-English/occasionally Swedish was so jarring, and I wanted Idris Elba’s cockney tones, not a wonky Tennessee. What’s the point?
3) An actual OAP actor please, not shit rubber wrinkle masks.
